A horrible idea I just had

Sometimes it is hard for me to fully explain my deep cynicism towards the modern age, so I'd like to illustrate it using a sort of thought experiment.

Imagine that Iphone came up with an ap ("there's an ap for that," is there motto, after all) in which a baby moniter would send signals directly to a cellphone. In other words, a person could listen to their baby on a monitor whereever they could get cellphone reception. How soon do you think it would be before parents started leaving their five month olds at home alone sleeping with the assumption that while they're off running errands their baby will stay safe. Seriously, how long do you think it would take before you heard about a woman calling 911from Safeway to report that she can't hear her baby, five miles away or some such, breathing.

Now, you know as well as I do that this would happen. You'd hear the news report and think, "stupid parent." You may even recognize that such an application is just a plain bad f'ing idea, but here's the thing, it's out there, it's just waiting to be invented and when it does, whose going to stop Iphone from distributing that ap and when they do, dollars to donuts, every new parent will get the URL as part of their information they pick up at their birthing classes.

I shudder at the thought. Enabling the single mother to abandon the child is a bad idea. But then, in this economy, if she doesn't, they will starve to death anyhow.
