A Quick Addendum
FM does not seem to correspond quite so well to people who are actually born and bred in Massachusetts, half of whom will have better than average attitudes from their peers. I should say this because it is a total mystery why people from perfectly respectable places come here and act like assholes.
I'm not saying that natives are cheerful or anything, only that they are less toxic.

My wife had much the same experience when she lived there. Her dad was raised there. Some of her friends as well. But the ones that weren't originally from there were of considerably worse stock.
My personal experience there was that some people were horribly full of themselves and very reserved... Unless you had common acquaintances, in which case they were suddenly your friend that you just met at the BBQ.
