turned in for college credit

Here's a sentence from a paper that was turned in for my English class. Enjoy!

"In the beginning, the kids do not accepts her intentions at all, because when she ask them what do they know about the "real" money, they think that she treating like a retards."

Would I be correct in assuming this is in response to Toni Cade Bambara's "The Lesson"?

Yes. Ironically a story about a teacher's attempt to convince a stubborn and unresponsive student that education is important lest one be stuck with a life that one does not want.

I do love irony. Though it is in this instance a little disheartening.

That's the problem with irony. It's the foundation of humor but when you see it in the real world it's just kind of sad. Ironic really.

What's sort of interesting is that the main character in the story, Sylvia, refuses to change and thus is forced to live in these economicaly depressed conditions despite her obvious intelligence. In other words, Sylvia's stubborness would keep her from ever going to college. I think the modern dillemma is that Sylvia would go to college but, once there, refuse to be educated. The problem persists, it's just been institutionalized. There are still Sylvias out there who hate education and thwart (or laugh at) the attempts of those who try to help them, but many of them are sitting in college classrooms.

But I'm obviously extrapolating too much. I mean for every modern day Sylvia who refuses to use spell check, proofread her/his paper or do the reading, etc., there's a good deal that do get it and who see education for what it is: a tool for SELF improvement that just happens to be taught by someone else; in other words, they shouldn't read Bambara for me, they should read her for themselves. So defiance, compliance, submission, whatever, are all sort of out of place. The problem with this paper is that the student didn't care at all--didn't want to prove themselve or show that they had any desire to know the material or offer their own education the respect needed to try. They just threw some words at a page in the hopes that it would count.
