I've been Dissed
So, I'm ABD. That's All But Dissertation. I have a dissertation idea. I've only been working on it for like 7 years now, so... I knew what I was going to write about before I arrived in Massachusetts, and since then I have attempted to tailor my intellectual growth towards this purpose.
My dissertation advisor heard my idea and put the kibosh on it. Evidently, it was far too complicated. He has since dummied down my dissertation further and further. Note, until it is fully dummied down to nothing, I cannot start writing it at all. I have written nearly fifty pages of dissertation proposal (all of which have been vetoed), but not a single page of actual dissertation yet. In fact, it is almost a waste of time to even read for the project as I don't know what the final version of the thing will be. It seems to have gone from a deep investigation of the nature of evil in the rhetoric of our culture and the place of Nazism as a metaphor in that rhetoric to five book reports about some books that mention Nazis in them (though maybe films).
I have a feeling that it will finally achieve completion as a Dissertation Haiku:
I Be Heap Big Smart.
Am, like, Intellectual.
Give me Ph.D.
Thus, my advisor will be assured that his role in my education will amount to a total of twenty minutes and possibly a hundred revisions.
Until then...my Elder Scrolls Oblivion character just really kicks ass!

I say... write your dissertation anyhow the way you would write it. Know your stuff the way you wanted to know your stuff. And have a dumbed down version for the academic masses. By the way, I'm Mopfog.
