Mob Rule
Quick question: Why?
Note: If I had fifty people reading my blog, that, all by itself, would be a blog post.
...but it isn't. Guy gives away military secrets at a time of war. Why isn't he executed as a traitor?
Guy molests kids and describes it on his blog. Why isn't he arrested?
Guy runs country into the ground. Why isn't he impeached?
Woman tries to run me off the road. Why won't the cops even talk to her?
So...here's my question: why isn't law enforcement, at any level, doing its job? Which leads me to wonder, did they ever? I mean, the protection that these criminals thrive under doesn't seem to be a new thing, so why hasn't it come up before? The various levels of law enforcement say that they can do nothing because of various reasons, (the woman who tried to kill me couldn't be brought in, for instance, because the whole thing was hear say despite the presence of other witnesses) but why could they do something in the past? What's changed?
And then it hits me: maybe they didn't do anything in the past either. Maybe it has always been the angry mob and we just don't have angry mobs anymore. Oh well. Dark day for justice. Nice bright day for the pedophiles.

Apparently, the part of town I live in has had three break-ins in the past couple of months. One of the break-ins happened in a friend's girlfriend's house.
The people who robbed it walked out the front door with pillow cases full of loot. The neighbors saw them. They left a fingerprint in dust on a shelf. The detective didn't take the fingerprint, which her roommate had pointed out for them. The detective didn't check with neighbors for witnesses, didn't take statements, etc. so she and her roommate filed a complaint, and took statements themselves from the neighbors.
A couple of rules to avoid having your home invaded:
1) All door-to-door salespeople are evil. Don't let them in the house and don't let them look in to see what you own.
2) Keep the drapes closed, especially at night when they can see in more easily. Nobody needs to know what you own, because it isn't anybody's business.
3) Keep shrubberies around the house low and have a clear line of sight along the sides of the house so that people driving by and neighbors can see if someone is sneaking around on your property.
4) Outdoor lighting diminishes the places someone with nefarious intent can hide. Vote for an extra street lamp on your street or just have subtle outdoor lighting. It doesn't have to be bright, just bright enough that someone wouldn't try to hide there.
5) Have a noisy yapper dog. Theory here is that excessive barking noise will keep someone away more than a big dog. Not sure if this is reinforced by fact or not.
6) Make money? Don't make much money? Never wear your income on your sleeve. What I mean by this is if you look rich but live in a poor neighborhood, you'll attract undue attention. Also, if you're one of those people who always has to have the newest video game, the best watch, the fastest car, you'll be attracting the wrong kind of attention eventually.
7) People who live above their means buy lots of things that thieves love to take. Live within your means; that way you don't waste money buying things you don't need, then end up having such things stolen.
