The Hills have I's
Okay, I'm not like...a patriarchal tyrant or anything. Women want to change their last name after they get married, fine. Women want to do the whole hyphen thing, fine. Let me tell you, anyone who has been successfully married for any length of time knows that name change or no, you two are about to become partners in EVERYTHING. But if it makes a woman feel comfortable to keep her maiden name in there somewhere, okay. Not traditional, kind of a moot point in a lot of ways, but okay by me. Hey, if you want to keep your "maiden" something, I would opt for maintiaining my "maiden free time." But then, my name's so common that I have to dodge other people's student loan creditor calls, so maybe changing names doesn't sound all that harsh to me. I'm willing to hear all sorts of view points on the subject.
However, today on the radio I heard a woman whose name was Mrs. Hills-Hills. She didn't want to take her husband's last name...even though it was the same as her maiden name.
I don't really have more to say on that subject.

A theory: The Hills' were related; the wife cooked up this ridiculous scheme to hide that fact (somehow). Everytime someone asks the obvious question, she can just say something like, "Well, it's a reminder that we're from different 'Hills' clans." Uhhh, yeah, right. And, so, why is it, again, that your offspring are siamese twins?
Well... maybe. I mean, I do live in Northampton Mass. That's the gay capital of the world. There's a gay channel, I'm not sure if anyone gets it outside of the Pioneer valley, but in any case, every week they have a feature story about having a gay vacation in Northampton. So...it's possible that the "husband" in this case fulfills the role in name only.
