Commentary on the tragedy
First off, read the post I did on Q's blog. Read it as someone who did not know that less than a week later we would face the largest school shooting in our nation's history.
People are asking now why it is that Virginia Tech did not use their PA system. I agree, but I wonder two things even more. First off, what was this kid like in class? What did he do that his teachers had to simply excuse? What warning signs were there that the teachers could not respond to because our American collegiate system had tied their hands for fear of a law suit?
Second, I'm wondering what medication the kid was taking. I want to know what the new breed of psychologist--the kind that turn their patients into drug addicts--I want to know what they gave him. Do a news story on that. Because I'm willing to bet dollars to dimes that this kid was heavily medicated on something before he snapped.
I'm about to go to school to teach a class. I have no idea what to tell them on this subject. Moreover, I don't know what I should feel about the students in the class who are quite clearly heavily medicated and edgy.
As a teacher, I think that the whole fucking thing is ridiculous.

Monstro, just a few small comments -
First, psychiatrists prescribe meds, not psychochologists.
Second I read your post the other day and could tell that you have students that disturb and maybe even scare you. You should ask your student counseling center, provost, ombudsman or whoever it is, that can answer you, what your options are when this is the case. You have a right to feel safe in your workplace.
Third, overmedicated folks are generally lethargic and out of it, not edgy. The edgy ones may be taking recreational drugs.
Finally, I would bet that the kid in VA needed medication, was prescribed medication, and was noncompliant with medication. Modern psychotropics are very effective for delusions in many cases. This whole thing is tragic and heartbreaking.
Don't give up.
And a professor just got fired over the issue, or rather a point he made concerning the issue and gun control. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070423/ap_on_re_us/professor_fired
